The Mixed Method is a Pilates Instructorship program offering a mix of classical Pilates techniques and disciplines with a contemporary and modern approach to instruction and methodology. In other words: You’ll learn the indispensable, foundational basics of Pilates instructing, as well as how to incorporate those basics into a teaching style that is fun, creative, safe and straightforward.
The Mixed Method has six available courses, totaling 505 credited hours, to complete the full certification program. You don’t have to complete all six courses at once, to be certified in one of the specific Pilates modalities. You can complete anywhere from a single course to all six, or just pick and choose the teaching courses that fit your specific teaching goals.
We’ve chosen to structure our nimble training program in this way for a few reasons. Our goal in creating this program was to provide a straightforward pathway to Pilates teacher training. We welcome potential trainees from all walks of life, and our a la carte courses take roughly 1-2 weekends to complete compared to the average 3-6 weekends required by many other comprehensive training programs. This keeps the TMM program accessible, flexible and affordable for everyone, which encourages essential diversity in our Pilates instructor community.

The Mixed Method welcomes instructor trainees from all walks of fitness instruction experience (and those new to it!). If you’ve been trained in any other fitness instruction, whether it’s yoga, barre, boxing, or personal training, you’re welcome to register for any of our instructor courses. The most important thing, regardless of your educational background, is that you have a fundamental understanding of Pilates. We recommend you acquire this foundational understanding by attending at least 20 Pilates classes at a certified Pilates studio.
No! Courses and certificates are offered a la carte. You can pursue each modality for a well-rounded instructor certification, or just pick one or a few to focus on. Regardless of how many different courses you take, the certification process is the same.
When earning a TMM teaching certification, there is always a written and practical exam that follows the completion of the coursework.
Each course requires 1-3 weekends of live training with a focus on form and technique within a wide range of specific Pilates moves. If seeking certification to teach, following the completion of one or more courses, you’ll then be asked to complete specific practice hours, a written and practical assessment, a postural training emphasis and demonstrate a comprehensive anatomy component.
If you’ve never taught a Pilates or fitness session, you can still learn how to teach from The Mixed Method! We welcome all fitness instructors and Pilates enthusiasts to our training program. Regardless of your background as an instructor, we do always recommend that you are at least familiar with Pilates and have attended 20+ classes at a certified Pilates studio before pursuing any teacher training program. Pilates teacher training can be a big commitment and does require a defined passion and invested mindset prior to on-boarding.
